Another summer is upon us and we are once again getting hit by widespread heat waves across the United States and the world… Climate change advocates tell us that we can expect to see many more of these earthquakes going forward due to mankind’s having changes the world’s climate through pollution and increased carbon dioxide. We can expect to have ocean levels rise, deserts expand and millions of people experience famine, war over scarce resources and other negative and unpleasant consequences. Are all of these things a sign of the end or simply a coincidence?

Let’s read what Jesus predicted 2,000 years ago. It’s found in Matthew 24:6-8

“And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are but the beginning of the birth pains.”

With both the recent earthquakes in Japan and Haiti along with the heat waves and increased global temperatures that will lead to famines and climate problems it certainly points to the end of time! Now do understand something. Earthquakes have been happening throughout human history. At the same time though they have in recent years been hitting large populated centers in unprecedented ways. There have been periods of warming and cooling in times past. In and of itself it wouldn’t be enough to be concerned. In combination with earthquakes and the other signs mentioned in Matthew 24 though, it gives us a very direct warning that we are living in the last generation before Jesus comes back.

A Sign of God’s wrath

When mankind doesn’t follow what God outlines in His word there are consequences. We are in the mess we are in globally today because of humankind’s greed and covetousness. Even though we know that what we are doing is harming us, our children and our grandchildren we can’t stop. We can’t stop because we are slaves to sin (see John 8:34). We can’t stop coveting unless and until we surrender ourselves to the Spirit of God and allow Him to live inside of us and take control of our lives. Mankind is on a collision course with catastrophe. We are speeding away at 100 miles an hour straight towards a rock cliff. Make no mistake. The Bible is very clear that the wicked, those who choose to go against God and not submit to Him will reap what they sow. There will be hell to pay. The question you must ask yourself is this. Will you recognize your part in this whole mess? Will you recognize that you can’t save yourself from your greed and covetousness? We can’t do it but God can. It is really our only hope.
