In the Bible God calls his people to pray to him. One of the most radical teachings of Jesus was that we could pray to God as our father and not simply as our God.

“In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.” – John 16:26-27
God is not some kind of impersonal diety who is looking to strike us down and kill us for any little mistake we make. He loves us with an infinite love that knows no bounds. He loved us so much that he gave us the greatest gift that he could… His son.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” – John 3:16-17
Now, if God is really our Father and he is a real being… Can we communicate with him? The answer is yes! In fact, the Bible tells us that God loves to talk to his children. We can come directly to him like a child would go to their father and ask him anything we want from him. Keep in mind of course that like an earthly father God won’t give us anything that will hurt us unnecessarily. God though, is willing and eager to give us gifts if we will ask him.
“For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” – Matthew 7:8-11
God is interested in a personal relationship with his creatures. He wants to have an intimate relationship with you… Did you know that you can talk to him like you do to a friend? There are examples of people in the Bible who had this kind of relationship. Moses is one of them.
“Thus the LORD used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend.” – Exodus 33:11
God doesn’t speak to us the same way that a human being talks to us. It is rarely audible. Some have described it as a whisper. Others as the still small voice. We can mistake it as an impression but if we listen close there are words… God will respond to us with words if we listen for them… He is interested in two way communication. Our prayers are not meant to be only one way.
Who can communicate with God?
The Bible tells us in John 10:14-16 that when we have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior we are considered his sheep. If we belong to Him we will recognize his voice. When God speaks, we will hear. Have you accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior? Have you asked God to forgive you of your sins and to come and live in your heart? Do you want the emptiness in your soul filled by the only one who can do it? God wants to be your friend. He wants to be your lover. Will you let Him in?
By letting him in, you take the first steps towards an intimate, personal relationship with Jesus! Nothing is more exciting!
